Was sick and although I didn’t think I had COVID but for the protection of my family I quarantined myself and got tested; the testing got delayed and because the quarantine and test took so long my aquarium got yucky and awful so today now that I know it’s not COVID and I’m off quarantine I changed out half the water, cleaned all the glass, boiled all the rocks and ornaments, and vacuumed all the gravel; hopefully I didn’t do too much at once to stress the fish out, but the tank needed it badly. Going to test the tank in a while and I may change half the water out again tomorrow

Cleaned the tank again; instead of every 7 days will now change water every 3-4 days. Basically Wednesday’s and Sunday’s I will change the water; getting tired of cleaning the algae and rocks every week, and my hope is the extra water change will slow down that algae process. I’m giving myself extra work by adding an extra water change, but my hope is the changes will make it easier and faster water changes by doing less ornamental and rock cleanings during the water changes. I will also see how the filter looks every 2 and 1/2 weeks since cleaning every 2 weeks seems a little fast as it isn’t that dirty and don’t want to clean it too fast and kill a lot of the good bacteria

The little guys didn’t last long I was going to get a 5 - 10 gal in and to create a nursery and also an extra tank to keep them in later but the other hungry fish got to them first; next time I’ll be better prepared

So the Zebra Cichlid is still holding eggs in her mouth but she’s not eating; you think I should buy a separator so she can relax a little more and possibly eat; any ideas on how to get her to eat? I throw a little food for her on the opposite side while the rest are busy trying to gobble up the food, but she’s not interested as she just looks at it falling to the ground which in turn has caused my nitrates to rise a little more than usual; any ideas will help

After much frustration the tank is finally cycled and passed its test of 4ppm ammonia dosing with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites in 24 hours and the tank will get it’s residents on Friday! I also changed the background to a lighted background and plan on getting a glass canopy and different light set for the tank I also during the process upgraded to a penn-Plex cascade 1200 canister filter 🙂

So I’m becoming beyond frustrated with the cycle at this point; ammonia went down a little but nitrites spiked to at least 3 ppm but it may be higher than that and stalled again! I saw a little rise in nitrates so that gives me hope, but I have the sneaking suspicion that the cycle is stalled yet again due to too many nitrites! Will test tomorrow hopefully I see the ammonia go down tomorrow and possibly more nitrates with the nitrites withering down too! I love in a dessert so water isn’t cheap here! Don’t want to have to keep doing full tank water changes daily! That’s going to get expensive
