Introduction
Though prominently displayed in our foyer, this tank is an ugly, neglected, wasteland.
Filtration
Penn Plax Cascade 700
In January, 2020, I added the QuietFlow HOB to it for some extra filtration and surface agitation, and also to stage filter media for other future tanks.
Lighting
I had a BuildMyLED 30" fixture (which I love) on a dimmer and timer, but I recently replaced that with a Finnex Planted+ 24/7 HLC LED. This has a built-in timer with different settings for different times of day, and I enjoy its versatility. Hopefully, it will provide enough light to keep some semblance of a carpet in this tank (but I don't have any PAR-measurement equipment).
When I restarted this tank in 2016, it was home to 7 very cute and fun dwarf puffers. When its MTS infestation became apparent, we shutdown our other tank and moved its inhabitants here: 1 clown loach ("Tiger Face"), 2 otos, and an albino cory.
The cory, 1 oto, and all the puffers eventually perished.
Only Ocho the oto and Tiger Face remain.
Maintenance
The only maintenance I've performed on this tank in the past 3 years is a rare algae / cyano cleanup and even rarer water change.
Inspiration & Goals
I recently decided to restart this tank again. I removed the algae-coated driftwood and rocks, and I added a few pieces of PVC pipe and a flower pot for shelter. As soon as my QT and 20L are finished cycling, I'm going to transplant the 2 critters over there and tear this tank down.
It will be reborn with new substrate, new plants, and a revived aquascape.
2020-03-31 Update:
I am in less of a hurry to tear this tank down because I am now uncertain about my chosen substrate. I have 2 big bags of Fluval Stratum ready to go. But after deploying that stuff in my 20L, I am not sure I want more of it in my house. I ordered a bag of Landen aquarium soil to experiment with and compare with the Stratum.
Another option is to get more Fluorite Black, vacuum the dirt & Fluorite out, clean it, and just go with plain Fluorite Black. Or good old BDBS, but I think I prefer a higher-CEC substrate.
And due to this indecision, I have begun treating this tank with UltraLife Blue Green Slime Stain Remover. If I can get the BGA under control and have a healthy plant mass, I won't be so disgusted by this tank in the interim.
