Introduction

Dropped into this hobby a bit by accident but it's becoming quite addictive :-)

Background

I've had fresh water tanks before (years ago...), and hadn't really put too much thought in to a having a marine tank.

Then we did renovations and my thought a peninsula aquarium tank would perfectly separate our new kitchen from the lounge area. Quite naively we bought the tank... :-)

We had the LFS help get us kick started, with main equipment, 20kg of live rock, sand etc.

Gradually we've leant... A lot!!! It's becoming quite addictive and really liking it.

I love watching the tank (especially at night) and seeing all the cool new things that appear. I think I see something new every day.

The tanks seems to be going really nicely. Building up coral and live rock formations. Can't wait to get more fish!

Maintenance

I try to keep maintenance minimum.

We have a 1000l refill tank under the floor which gets delivered, thus avoiding mixing etc

It's not too hard but I do wish there was a quicker, easier way to test water! Fortunately apart from a minor battle to keep calcium and alk up, the water has been extremely stable.

On average you perform a 15.2% water change every 18 days.

Disasters & Regrets

We did all the wrong things... Throwing in lots of fish soon after it first finished cycling. Then watched them all die one by one (from white spot), except one goby (now named Han Solo). To avoid that happening again I've since bought and setup a quarantine tank in my son's room.
We had a lots of delays as we learned and various LFS stuffed us around

We really, really should have done more research before installing... Then again what better way to learn!
